Patronymics in Denmark:
A custom of name change among Danes in early days was to use your father’s first name as your last name, adding “sen” or “datter” to the end. This is called patronymics, which can be very confusing in tracing ancestors. Once our ancestors immigrated to America they stopped using patronymics and adopted the American custom of maintaining the same surname in a family.
